The most exciting and the hardest decisions to make involved the finishes. Choosing the flooring, the bathroom tiles, the kitchen sink, the faucets, the lighting fixtures - making a final decision on these occurred only after spending hours and hours visiting stores, showrooms, looking in magazines and watching decorating shows on television.
It also involved compromise. I didn't get my granite counter tops but I love the white apron-front sink I finally chose. I splurged on the ensuite bathroom tiles - it was a small bathroom afterall. We decided on a laminate floor as opposed to wood early on because of durability. I couldn't be worried about B and B guests removing their shoes. However, we chose a more expensive laminate - Park Avenue by Bruce flooring and it looks like real wood. I wasn't sure at first if I liked it but once all the furniture was in place, it looked great. The first thing most visitors to the house notice and comment on is the floors.
We chose our Price-Phister faucets with the help of my brother-in-law who is in the business and I managed to obtain most of our numerous lighting fixtures from big box stores which kept the cost reasonable.
Of course we needed some new furniture since not all of our old stuff suited the new space so we invested in a new couch, two arm chairs, an ottoman and a media cabinet. To this we added some great thrift store finds ( a little paint can work wonders) and donations from family. My best find was 5 upholstered dining room chairs from a local used furniture store for which I exchanged my wooden dining chairs and paid $70.00 total. Of course we also needed to purchase brand new appliances and new beds ( a queen and 2 twins) - not cheap but used was not an option for these essentials.
I found most of the accessories, sheets and towels at Homesense - one of my favourite places to shop - interesting stuff and great deals but you have to visit the store regularly.
