Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it. ~Russel Baker..
and suffer we have with humidex levels in the thirties and infrequent rain. My air conditioner has been going full tilt but I've been able to put laundry out on the line to dry almost every day. The population in Picton has tripled as vacationers have flocked to the beach. Sandbanks has never looked more inviting and business is booming at Nine Gables. I'm just glad I'm not the one who has to pack my bags and leave after a 2 night stay. I feel a surge of delight when I remember that this beautiful region of Ontario is now my home and at this time of the year, there is no place that I would rather be than Prince Edward County. When it's too hot to sit in the garden, we pack a picnic and head to the water where the air temperature feels 10 degrees cooler.
Our project list this summer is short, which is a good thing, since running the bed and breakfast takes up most of our mornings and 30 minutes to an hour of preparation in the evening. However, I continue to look for ways to improve the garden by adding a bench or an interesting structural element. My newest addition is a steel goose suspended in the air on a long arm. It appears to be flying when the wind catches its wings. I purchased it from a local blacksmith and love it so much that I now wish I had a whole flock of these geese. It looks particularly dramatic at night when lit up by a spot light.
My husband is currently building an obelisk using up some copper pipe that was removed from the house during the renovation. I haven't decided where to put it yet but I have plans to expand the garden on the north side of the house - a fall project!
