Too hot and too dry will be the way this summer is remembered.
The grass which stayed green all winter is now brown and crunches when walked upon. The flower pots need watering twice a day and even the flower beds looked parched the day after they are watered. The farmers are saying the crops are in danger - especially the corn and we now have a fire ban in effect which is making for a different type of camping season at Sandbanks. We will need several days of steady rain to reverse the effects of this weather!
I'm sure all the extra air conditioning will be reflected in the hydro bill at the end of this month. The central air in the B and B portion of the house is keeping it cool at a comfortable 72 degrees F for our guests but the portable air conditioner in our loft apartment has had a hard time keeping the temperature below 82 degrees F. I love summer except when it's too hot to go outside - may as well be winter! With no significant rain in the forecast - maybe a rain dance would be in order? Meanwhile, I keep watering the flowers and watch the grass turn to dust.
July 26 - a full day of rain at last. Not enough to turn the grass green but the plants are looking healthier. I took this opportunity to mulch the tomato bed and the new Japanese maple we planted yesterday.
