Grass - Highly Over-rated.

I've come to the conclusion, after spending too much money and time on my lawn that maintaining a lush, green lawn is more trouble than it's worth.
Last summer, drought and grubs destroyed much of my grass.  The grass I had fertilized and weeded diligently every spring.  According to my Google research, grubs prefer to attack healthy lawns.  I had to agree when I looked across the road to my neighbour's lawn this spring.  It looked lush and green despite the fact that he gave it no special attention and parked his truck on it much of last summer.  Undaunted, I sprayed nematodes on the grass and top seeded the bare spots.  Some of the lawn recovered but crabgrass took over much of the destroyed areas on the north side of the house.  So I threw in the trowel, enlarged the flower beds and have decided to replace what little grass is left on the north side with a patio and walkway.  Below are the results of our efforts.  Thankfully August was not as hot as July.
Step 1 - Remove the sod

Step 2 - add the screenings
Step 3 - add the flagstones

...and more perennials

and you have a beautiful and low maintenance garden.
