This is a good season to be living in town and I'm glad our house is short walk away from Picton's Main Street. I don't need to rely on the car to get my mail or visit the bank or library. I justify the walk as being good for the dog and healthy exercise for me. No need to brush the snow off the car when it's not required - I just wait until it melts.
So here are my top ten things to do in the County during January, February and March:
- After a brisk walk into town, stop for coffee at On The Bean. Very quiet in the winter, one can read the paper and even get a comfy seat on the couch.
- Browse through the second hand stores (Second Time Around, Thrift Shop and City Revival) on Main St. for interesting finds.
- Have afternoon tea at Miss Lily's and browse through the adjoining bookstore while you are there.
- Take a walk through Glenwood Cemetery (especially nice after a fresh snowfall).
- Drive to Bloomfield, browse through the stores visit Country Traders (second hand furniture store) and have lunch at the Saylor's House cafe.
- Have an English High Tea at the O'Connor House in Deseronto (open Wed to Sun. in the winter) and browse the adjoining Antique Emporium while you are waiting for tea to be served.
- Take in a movie at the Regent Theatre ($7.00 on Tuesdays and Saturdays).
- Visit the Picton Library for a poetry reading or sit by the fireplace and read a magazine.
- Go for a swim in the very warm salt water pool at the Claramount Inn.
- Enjoy live music at the Acoustic Grill on Main St. on Friday and Saturday nights.
Milford Winter Carnival - end of January
Tall Poppy Cafe in Wellington offers musical entertainment and a great lunch menu from 1 - 3 every Sunday afternoon during February.
Mt. Tabor Playhouse
Cross-Country Skiing at Sandbanks, skating in the Picton Harbour (weather permitting)
Waring House Pub - live music on Friday and Sat nights.
